If you know me well, you probably know that Tool is my favorite band. Actually you probably don't have to know me that well to know that. I am not here to talk about the band right now, but their drummer. Danny Carey to be more precise. Danny Carey is the greatest drummer of all time, as knowledgeable drummers will agree. There are many things that make people dislike a certain drummer. It might be that they play to sloppy, or they just fill every bit of space with as many notes as possible, or that they just sell themselves to anyone just to make money and their face is everywhere. Danny Carey fortunately does not fall under any of these categories. Carey is known for his flawless technique, his fluency to many types of music and drumming, and his uncanny skill of being able to play up to 4 rhythms at once, or play two different time signatures at once. Danny never plays to overbearing or out of place. In most bands that change time signatures constantly, there is a kind of robotic nature to the drumming, and it is very cluttered and in your face. Tool is a band that will play any time signature under the sun and do it in a way that blends so smoothly that comparing them to other time changing bands would be like comparing smooth creamy ice cream with a computer. It cant be done. Take tools song "Schism" for instance. The song, and i wouldn't lie to you, switches time signatures 47 times. switching between 11/8 and 15/8 and 6/8 and 5/4 to name a few. Carey makes drumming look so easy when you watch him, but any drummer who has tried to play Tool knows that they find themselves utterly embarrassed, realizing that they are going to need months of practice to get the song at least playable. Danny composes all his parts with geometry and his own beliefs that everything in life revolves around a circle, creating his circle theory of drumming. His drum set is set up with sacred geometry, with every part of it creating special geometrical shapes making movement around it very easy. In the late 90's, Danny grew anxious to learn new techniques and sounds for his drumming. He started learning Tabla, which is an indian drumming instrument that you use your fingers with. It resembles a bongo or other african drums. Tabla is basically like a second language for drummers. He mastered it and now uses it in tool songs. It is nearly impossible to ever be able to top danny's playing ability, because you would not only have to learn tabla, practically every time signature known to man, and develop flawless technique, but you would also have to be smarter than him, because his drum parts are all created with math, and geometry theories. Danny Carey is my drumming hero, and the most skilled drummer of all time.

ReplyDeletetony i would disagree with one of you first sentences."Danny Carey is the greatest drummer of all time, as knowledgeable drummers will agree." I will admit he is one of the best drummers ever but not THE bc u cannot really put anyone as the best of anything. There are drummers who are better than him in different styles of music. Also one thing i have noticed about it playing is that he uses waaay to much crash cymbal. Other than that it was very well written and informative.
